Jenna and Dillon’s Engagement Session at McConnells Mill State Park

I had a really good time spending the afternoon with Jenna and Dillon for their engagement session at McConnells Mill State Park.

Both of them grew up in Wexford, Pennsylvania, and attended North Allegheny High School. Their relationship came later, and now they are engaged, planning their wedding, and preparing to move into a new home together in Ellwood City.

As we walked through McConnells Mill, I had the chance to learn more about them, what they enjoy doing together, and what life looks like for them at this particular point in their relationship.

That made the location especially fitting.

Why McConnells Mill Made Sense for Their Engagement Photos

Jenna and Dillon both enjoy spending time outdoors.

Hiking, fishing, and archery are all things that are already part of their lives, so photographing them at McConnells Mill gave us a setting that made sense for who they are.

The park also gave us a lot of variety without requiring the session to feel disconnected from one location.

We could work around the water, wooded areas, trails, rocks, and some of the recognizable scenery around McConnells Mill while still allowing the session to move naturally from one setup to another.

For an engagement session, I like when the location gives us options but still has some connection to the couple.

In Jenna and Dillon’s case, an outdoor setting felt considerably more appropriate than choosing a location simply because it photographs well.

Bringing Archery Into the Session

One of my favorite parts of the afternoon was incorporating archery into some of their engagement photographs.

I thought that was a great addition because it is something they actually enjoy.

Personal interests can give an engagement session another dimension when they are included naturally. I do not think every hobby needs to become the entire concept of a photo shoot, but when something is already part of a couple’s life, it can make sense to give it some space.

For Jenna and Dillon, we could create some photographs involving archery and then move into the rest of the session without making every image revolve around it.

That balance gave them photographs connected to one of their shared interests while still leaving plenty of room for portraits of the two of them together.

Getting to Know Them While We Walked

Jenna and Dillon were both down-to-earth and easy to talk to from the beginning.

That made the session enjoyable for me because the conversation never felt forced.

As we moved around the park, we talked about some of the experiences they have shared, the things they enjoy doing together, their wedding plans, and the home they are preparing to move into in Ellwood City.

Engagement sessions give me an interesting opportunity in that respect.

I am obviously there to create photographs, but spending an hour walking around with a couple also gives me time to understand a little more about how they interact.

Some couples joke constantly.

Some are quieter.

Some naturally stay close to one another while we walk.

Others become much more animated once we start talking about something familiar.

The more I understand those little tendencies, the easier it becomes to give direction that actually works for the people standing in front of me.

Engagement Photos Do Not Need to Feel Like One Long Pose

There were certainly moments during Jenna and Dillon’s session when I gave specific direction.

That might mean adjusting where they were standing, changing the position of a hand, moving them into better light, or deciding how I wanted to use a particular part of the park.

But I also wanted the session to have room to move.

We walked.

We talked.

We incorporated something they enjoy doing together.

And we used different parts of McConnells Mill as the afternoon progressed.

That mixture gives me considerably more to work with than asking a couple to repeat variations of the same pose for an entire session.

Engagement photographs can include polished portraits while still leaving room for movement, conversation, and the way two people naturally respond to each other.

Photographing This Point in Their Lives

Jenna and Dillon have quite a bit happening at once.

They are engaged.

They are planning a wedding.

They are preparing to move into a new home.

And they are doing all of that while continuing the everyday routines and interests that were already part of their relationship.

That is what I found interesting about photographing them at this particular time.

Years from now, these photographs will show how they looked during their engagement, but they will also connect back to a period when a lot of their life together was changing at once.

McConnells Mill gave us a place to document some of that without making the session feel overly formal.

Engagement Photography at McConnells Mill and Around Pittsburgh

M4J Photography provides engagement and couples photography throughout Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania, and surrounding communities.

I work with couples to choose locations and session ideas that make sense for them rather than automatically using the same setting or sequence of photographs for everyone.

That can mean an engagement session at McConnells Mill State Park, a Pittsburgh overlook, a neighborhood with some personal significance, a conservatory, a downtown setting, or another location connected to the way a couple actually spends time together.

Personal interests can also be incorporated when they add something meaningful to the session. For Jenna and Dillon, that meant including archery alongside the more traditional engagement portraits we created throughout the park.

The goal is to give couples clear direction while still leaving enough room for the session to reflect how they interact with each other.

Jenna and Dillon

Jenna and Dillon, thank you both for choosing me to photograph the two of you.

I had a great afternoon getting to know you, walking around McConnells Mill, and hearing more about the life you are building together.

Between wedding planning and getting ready for your move to Ellwood City, I know this is a busy period for both of you.

I am glad we had an afternoon to slow things down a little and document where the two of you are right now.

Congratulations again on your engagement!
